1 to 25 Perspective
My Final Year Project looked at linear food production and what we can do to bend them into more circular processes which begin to eliminate waste and give back to the natural environments they take from. A city wide masterplan for the Southern Welsh city of Newport was developed which involved flood attenuation and a green corridor along its main river. A more detailed look at a new harbour developed into a fish farm with adjoining restaurant, which gave back to the water produce it sold to its customers.
1 to 500 Local Master Plan
The old wharf of Newport was the epicentre for the city's export of coal and provided jobs and identity to most of the inhabitants. Post industrialisation, the wharf was filled in and my proposal, along with a green corridor to absorb flood damage, was to redig the harbour and reimagine it as a fishing harbour, creating new jobs and identity.
Front Elevation
The Fish Farm and restaurant had a direct link to the harbour that served it, both physically and metaphorically. Fish was brought straight from the river to the restaurant and a walkway along the farm gave customers a look inside the process of fish farming.
Laser cut model
I produced a laser cut model of the project to showcase the materiality. Instead of building solid walls, I cut 21 separate layers of mdf and stacked them which gave the burnt timber effect which was inspired by the harbour's industrial past of coal trading.
Internal Perspective
Internally the materiality was kept minimal, using polished concrete floors to emulate the rippling grey water of the harbour and an exposed gluelam structure reminded customers of the projects ambitions to heal the environment it was built from.
Heating and Ventilation Strategy
In order to keep carbon usage low, I utilised passive systems as much as possible with low lying vents facing the water and high level vents at the back to give a stack effect. Large cranked roof joists keep the large interior spaces cool during hot months.
